Clear thinking about predictions is a skill that fits in five steps. This guide takes each in turn and includes a short example so that the sequence is easy to remember and apply.
Define
Know what you are predicting. A winner, a goals total and a clean sheet are different questions with different evidence. Write the question in one line, for example: will the home team win after regular time?
Gather
Collect facts on form, availability and context from reliable sources. Aim for facts you can check: the last five results by venue, the injury list, the days since the last match. Leave opinions for later.
Weigh
Decide which facts matter most for this match. A missing goalkeeper outweighs an old head-to-head trend. Strength over a season outweighs a single result.
Example
Home team strong at home, visitors missing their goalkeeper: both point toward the home side. The head-to-head record is mixed and gets little weight.
Decide
State your view with a level of confidence. A probability such as 52, 26 and 22 percent says more than a single pick. Make sure the numbers add up to 100.
Review
Examine your reasoning afterwards. Did the factors you chose matter? Was anything missing? Note one thing to do differently next time.
Predictions are opinions and should be used responsibly and within the law.
