Behind the drama of an upset lies a calm piece of mathematics. Football goals are rare and roughly random, which means that even large differences in team quality leave plenty of room for the weaker side. A small amount of probability theory is enough to see why.
Goals as Random Events
Suppose a team scores on average 1.5 goals per match. In any given game it will score zero about 22 percent of the time, once about 33 percent, twice about 25 percent and three or more about 20 percent. The variation is large, even with the same underlying ability.
A Worked Example
Take a strong home team expected to score 2.0 and a weaker visitor expected to score 0.8. Using a Poisson model, the home side wins roughly 68 percent of the time, a draw occurs about 19 percent of the time and the away side wins around 13 percent.
So the weaker team avoids defeat in about a third of such matches, even though the home side is much better.
Why Draws Matter
Draws take away a large part of the favourite’s winning probability. When two teams score few goals, level scores become even more likely.
Accumulation Over a Season
If such a favourite plays many matches like this, it will drop points regularly. Across a whole league season, hundreds of results with an 80 percent favourite will include dozens that go the other way.
Limits of the Model
The Poisson model ignores injuries, tactics, red cards and changing motivation. It gives a baseline, and real analysis adjusts for those factors. Predictions remain opinions, offered for information and entertainment, and should be used responsibly and within the law.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Poisson model?
A method that turns average scoring rates into the probability of each scoreline.
How likely is an upset in the worked example?
Around 13 percent for an away win, with a further 19 percent for a draw.
Why do draws matter so much?
They remove part of the favourite’s winning chance.
Does the model include injuries?
No.
Are predictions certain?
No.
